Sunrise from the Langham

Original Oil Painting
20″x30″
NFS (Currently being exhibited at the Salmagundi Club, 95 Grand National Exhibition, NYC, through Nov 24, 2023)

Morning light at 4:30 am on the Chicago River’s River Walk on Wacker Drive. This painting shows a homeless man on lower Wacker and the already bustling downtown exclusive area of the Chicago River. This looks out to Navy Pier and Lake Michigan catching the beautiful details of the architecture of the city.

Technique: Drawn accurately in pencil from multiple sized photographs using a grid. The number of floors and windows, and the architecture is accurate. Capturing the sunrise at 4:30 am in the morning was attempted 3 days in a row from the 13th floor of the Langham hotel. All 3 days were gray, clouded mornings. This sunrise was created from other photographs and reflections were painted as deemed appropriate.
